Winder Power customer Tata Steel has ordered a 66/11kV transformer as part of a strategic equipment upgrade project.

Tata Steel Strip Products UK Ltd (TSSP UK) owns and operates a large steel manufacturing facility in Port Talbot in South Wales.  The facility has been in operation for more than 100 years, with some of the existing High Voltage (HV) electrical infrastructure dating back more than 50 years.

As a result, Tata Steel is embarking on a programme to improve operations and production stability at the site and therefore HV electrical infrastructure equipment upgrades are required in the next few years to meet statutory operational requirements and end of life replacement needs.

A spare 66/11KV transformer is required at the Cefn Gwrgan substation, located on the premises which are owned and operated by Tata Steel.

Under the supply contract, Winder Power will be responsible for the provision of supervision, labour, materials and equipment for the design, manufacture, supply, off-loading, installation, testing and commissioning of the transformer.

Commenting on the new contract, Winder Power Managing Director Paul Matthews said: “ With over 500 transformers on site, the Port Talbot plant has to be one of the most densely populated transformer locations in the country, and we are delighted to add one of our high quality units to the tally. I hope it will continue to support them for decades to come!”
